Mob Lynching in India

MOB LYNCHING IN INDIA

‘Individual will no match for mad mobs.’ Whenever a mob gets violent, no intellect can help to calm it. Even the most sensible minds lose their calm and get carried away with the rage of the mob. And such a mob is the most dangerous thing that not only hurts the society but puts a question mark on humanity as a whole.

INTRODUCTION

The mob is a group of people, particularly ferocious and violent, which disturb harmony and peace in society and lynching means to kill without legal process. So, mob lynching means the illegal killing of an individual by a group of people, following the same ideology. We are seeing in the past few years the cases of mob lynching are increasing in India.

MOB LYNCHING IN INDIA

We see people belonging to the same religion, community, caste, or creed, gathering at places, taking out rallies to fight for their rights. It takes no time for such a group to become violent. Many times, it is impossible for the policemen to handle it.

Mob lynching is a result of this attitude. The unfortunate killing of people, because of the beliefs of a particular community, is the cruellest thing ever and raises many issues in front of all of us. Is it justified? Is it humane?

QUOTE

“What has violence ever accomplished? What has it ever created? No martyr’s cause has ever been stilled by an assassin’s bullet. No wrongs have ever been righted by riots and civil disorders. A sniper is only a coward, not a hero; and an uncontrolled or uncontrollable mob is only the voice of madness, not the voice of the people.” – Robert Kennedy

“Once, the spirit was God, then it became man, and now, it is even becoming mob” – Freidrich Neitzsche

“Religion is the Ideal of the mob, it adores everything it does not understand”- Freiderick the great

STATISTICS – What Numbers have to Say?

Recently, the UP government has proposed to draft a law, relating to the mob lynching crimes, which states that, life imprisonment should be given to those found guilty of the offense.

The law is proposed keeping in mind the growing mob lynching cases in the state and in the country. Although, as the officials say, the law alone cannot decrease the offenses, and punishment ranging from 7 years of imprisonment to life imprisonment should be given.

The Dadri village mob lynching that took place in 2015, killing a 52-year-old Muslim, who was suspected to be slaughtering a cow. Mohammed Akhlaq was killed at his house by a group of people, with sticks, knives and other tools, say the reports.

In 2017, in Alwar, Rajasthan, a dairy farmer called Pehlu Khan was killed by a group of 200 people of the ‘Hindutva’ samaj. The government initially filed the victim for illegal cattle slaughter offense.

DESCRIPTION – Let’s the Deep Dive

The religious ideologies that our country has, in every religion, are so deeply rooted in the minds of people, that they believe in them, without understanding them. The faith in a particular religion is so huge, that they never try to question the things that their religious books tell them. This is called blindfaith. And it can be extremely dangerous for others if ever it’s not followed.

Believe it or not, the majority of the cases of mob lynching that take place in our country, are because of religion. Almost all the cases that have happened in the past years, are a result of hurting someone’s religious sentiments. People are ready to kill the other person, who violates their so called ‘believes’, and not even think once, before doing it.

But what is the reason behind such mob lynching? Is it the rage of the mob, that takes everyone with it? Or the people are really so angry that they do not care about killing anyone in front of their superstitious beliefs?

The man who stands away from the mob is often called a coward. So, a way to deal with it is, or to survive is, to do what others are doing. Even the decent and gentlemen have to turn violent while in that situation of the mad mob in order to survive. The same men that we see helping others, kind and generous, has turned ferocious when in a mad mob. Sometimes it’s because of their own believes, that they are right and by hook or crook they have to get things done, and sometimes it’s just to sustain.

An individual is forced to do things according to the environment he stays in. Even in our society, there are a set of rules that everyone has to follow.

The important thing is to understand first, that is it for the good or for the bad. If the principles are for the goodwill of everyone, fine, but if it hurts any one person, it’s not. Also, one should be able to express himself or herself, no matter what society teaches us to behave.

CONCLUSION

No religion teaches it’s people to kill anyone. No religion tells them to hurt anyone. Religions are made to unite people, not to divide people. The mob lynching that takes place, not only hurt one community or religion but the society as a whole.

The people who are responsible for such cruel activities, themselves don’t know what the religion has asked them to do. Without understanding what is actually said, they ‘believe’ whatever is said. Incomplete knowledge about religion forces them to do such cruel practices, which can never be justified.
