Coding-Decoding PDF – Logical Reasoning

Coding-Decoding Reasoning

This topic is one of the easiest from the Logical Reasoning Section

It carries a weightage of a minimum of 5 marks in MBA CET.

Concept

The sum on the coding-decoding topic is as follows:

In a certain code “PALM‟ is written as £@?$ and “ARM‟ is written as @*$

How can “ALARM‟ be written in that code?

1) @ £ @ ? $
2) @ $ ? £ @
3) ? @ @ £ $
4) @ ? @ £ $
5) None of these

Solution:

P – £
A – @
L – ?
M – $
R – *
M – $
ALARM = @?@*$, the correct option is ‘None of these’

Types of Coding-Decoding Questions

Type 1 – Definite Logic

If in a certain code, LUTE is written as MUTE and FATE is written as GATE. How will BLUE be written in that code?

Solution: All letters are not coded, only the first letter of the word is code with the logic of +1 letter in alphabetical order i.e. L+1 = M and F+1 = G so B+1 = C and answer is CLUE.

Type 2 – Fixed Identity

In a certain code, STOVE is written as FNBLK, then how will VOTES be written in the same code?

Solution:

  • S-F
  • T-N
  • O-B
  • V-L
  • E-K

So, VOTES will be LBNKF. A fixed code is assigned to given entities. These type of sums are easy to solve because you are not required to crack to logic as the same is pretty clear from the question.

Type 3 – Number Symbol Exchange

If REQUEST is written as S2R52TU, then how will ACID will be written as?

Solution:

The vowels are numbered and consonants follow the logic of +1 in Alphabetical sequence.

A-1  E-2  I-3  O-4  U-5

Similary, ACID will be 1(A-1)D(C+1)3(i-3)2(E-2) i.e. 1D3E

Type 4 – Substitution

If ‘pen’ is ‘table’, ‘table’ is ‘fan’, ‘fan’ is ‘chair’, ‘chair’ is ‘roof’, on which of the following will a person sir?

a. Fan  b. Chair  c. Roof  d. Table  e. Pen

Solution: The answer is c. Roof

The person will sit on Chair but here, Chair is called Roof.

Type 5 – Decryption

In a certain code language, ‘dom pul ta‘ means ‘bring hot food‘, ‘pul tir sop‘ means ‘food is good‘ and ‘tak da sop‘ means ‘good bright boy‘. Which of the following mean ‘hot’ in that language.

a. dom  b. pul  c. ta  d. Cannot be determined  e. None of these

Solution:

dom pul ta   bring hot food

pul tir sop   food is good

tak da sop  good bright boy

pul is common from first 2 sentences so it will be assigned to food as food is also a common element.

*To find code of hot we need code for bring which cannot be determined from the given information.

Type 6 – Match the Column

Column 2 Column 2
CURSE opkif
INCUR fbpoc
TALLY  ughvg
CADET rkufh
DRIP rotc
TOIL jugc
VARY vwoh

Decode the language

Solution: Check the Column 2 for CURSE and VARY, you will find o as the common letter. It definitely stands for R from Column 1.

Similarly, check CADET and VARY, h stands for A

Go on check all such common words and you will be able to solve the complete problem.
