Management Lessons from Dussehra

Vijaya Dashami

Dussehra/Vijaya Dashami

Have you ever wondered of extracting management lessons from Dussehra? Before getting into the lessons, let’s understand the reason behind celebrating this auspicious moment.

Why is Dussehra celebrated?

There are 2 major reasons

  1. Lord Rama killed Ravana and therefore Dussehra is celebrated as a Symbol of Victory
  2. Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura after a ferocious battle of 10 days. Hence, this day is also called Vijaya Dashami – Win of Good over Evil

Management Lessons from Dussehra

Let me try to relate the Management world with Dussehra with the following 3 lessons and realtime examples.

  1. HRM skills – Human Resources Management
  2. Disruption
  3. Strategy Game

HRM Skills – The way Rama leads the Vanar Sena was phenomenal. Initially, the Vanar Sena was not a part of Lord Rama’s conquest to find Sita. Vali, the king of Vanar Sena was killed by Lord Rama for his immoral actions of kidnapping Sugriva’s wife and sending him on exile.

After this event, Sugriva was crowned as the king of Kishkindha. The Vanar Sena helped Lord Rama to build the floating bridge at Kanyakumari. The networking grew stronger as Lord Rama helped everyone during his conquest and in return, he received direction to find Sita and a powerful army of Kishkindha.

The human interaction happening inside any organization reflects the output in proportionate value. The recruitment process is so vital that just imagine recruiting a person who is not giving the desired output, thus becoming a liability over an asset.

Disruption – Mhaishasura succeeded in grabbing God Bramha’s attention and was blessed with a boon – as per the blessings, no God, Man or Beast could kill Mahishasura. He became complacent and started shading atrocities because he thought of himself as invincible.

Lord Shiva along with other Gods created Goddess Durga to deal with mighty Mhaishasura. The battled went for 9 days and on the 10th day, Goddess Durga killed Mhaishasura.

We can relate the disruption caused by Jio when other companies like Vodafone, Idea and Airtel were looting subscribers for Internet data. Today, Jio is the market leader and the presence of the other players is definitely questionable.

Strategy Game – It seemed impossible to kill Ravana as all the strategies were failing. Lord Rama fired golden arrows to take care of 10 heads of Ravana, this helped for a while but again those heads grew back. Matali was Lord Rama’s charioteer who was watching this struggle. He suggested Lord Rama to use that dreaded arrow of Brahma, given to him by Sage Agastya. Finally, Ravana was dead when Lord Rama fired this divine arrow.

One cannot keep using the same strategies to market product and increase sales. This applies to all the other activities of the business as well. The strategy should be changed as per the market conditions, competitors moves and customer needs.
